Hebrew Study
The Hebrew language is very old. It has remained a constant over thousands of years, acting as a glue which held together the far flung Jewish diaspora. The primary religious document, the Torah, is preserved and studied in the original Hebrew and study of text is a cornerstone of our tradition. Our liturgy includes weekly Torah readings, and most prayerbooks are in Hebrew. The unique languages of the Jewish diaspora, such as Ladino and Yiddish, even used the Hebrew alphabet.
The pioneers who founded the yishuv in Israel were inspired to re-invigorate Hebrew as a modern, living language, to help unite Jews from all the countries of the Diaspora. The rebirth of Hebrew is unique in the history of language, an ancient tongue being brought back into use as a living language.
At TBZ, we support the study of the Hebrew language as a means of engaging with our culture and religion; and weekly classes in beginning and intermediate Hebrew have been offered as part of our Beit Midrash program.
