9:30-10:15pm Nishmat Hayyim (Breath of Life) Meditation
10:30-11:30pm Learning with Rabbi Or Rose: Of Shamen & Shofarot: Hasidic & Neo-Hasidic Tales
Join us as we explore two narratives about the transformative power of sounding the shofar. One comes from the dream diary of the early Hasidic master, Rabbi Moshe Hayyim Ephraim of Sudilkov (Degel Mahaneh Ephraim, d. 1800), the other from the contemporary Neo-Hasidic leader, Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi (Reb Zalman, d. 2014). In these dramatic episodes, the protagonists share with us unexpected encounters with spiritual figures that transform their experiences by sounding the shofar and shifting their understandings of the nature of teshuvah (spiritual and ethical “return”). Together, these stories (including a vivid description of a journey into the hollow of the ram’s horn!) offer us compelling material for reflection and discussion as we prepare for the Yamim Nora’im and the call of the shofar.
Rabbi Or Rose, a proud TBZ member, is the founding Director of the Betty Ann Greenbaum Miller Center for Interreligious Learning & Leadership of Hebrew College and a senior consultant to Interfaith America. Rabbi Rose is the co-editor of With the Best of Intentions: Interreligious Missteps & Mistakes (Orbis, 2023) and Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi: Essential Teachings (Orbis, 2020). His forthcoming biography for teen readers, My Legs Were Praying: A Biography of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel will be published in the winter of 2025 by Monkfish.
