Author Joan Leegant, and Telling Jewish Stories in a Post-October 7th World (in person and online)

December 5, 2024
7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
On Thursday December 5th, TBZ is thrilled to be hosting award-winning author, Joan Leegant, whose stunningly timely story collection, DISPLACED PERSONS, shines a light on American Jewish life and Israel.  Join us for an eye-opening conversation about the creative process and writing about Israel after October 7 in the current climate of rising antisemitism in the publishing world, including alarming boycotts of Israeli and Jewish authors.
DISPLACED PERSONS won the national New American Fiction Prize, chosen out of over 500 submissions. Hadassah selected the book for their “One Book, One Hadassah” program where they highlight only six books each year for their hundreds of thousands of members.
Reviews and Praise for DISPLACED PERSONS:
“Breathtaking short story collection…. Displaced Persons’ characters are all so fully and compassionately drawn it’s hard to remember they exist only in a story.” — New York Journal of Books
“Deeply affecting… Leegant has written gorgeous tales of wandering Jews.”  — Hadassah Magazine
“A treasure of expertly crafted dramas that probe the eternal themes of belonging and the quest for meaningful relationships.”  — Jewish Journal

“Deliciously complex character-driven stories that explore exile, diaspora, parenthood, and marriage, often with a sharp sense of humor and an emotional wallop.” — Chicago Review of Books
“Prophetic… Leegant ponders both the Jewish and Israeli experiences in contemporary life.” — The Times of israel
